Gas Stove line Installation methods

How would you run my gas line?

There are several options available for running a gas line from the cylinders to the appliance. While we have flexibility in routing, the type of gas pipe used must meet specific installation requirements. Below are the main methods:

  • Surface-mounted – Suitable for internal or external runs (external runs may require UV protection).
  • Through your cupboards – Just below your counter top so the line is visually out of the way.
  • Chased into walls or floors – Gas pipe can be concealed within grooves cut into solid surfaces.
  • Installed within the foundation – Pipe can be laid before the concrete slab is poured.
  • Trenched underground – Standard depth is 600mm, but this may be reduced to 50mm if laid beneath paving.
  • Run through ceiling spaces – In this case, continuous lengths of pipe must be used (e.g., CSST with no joints in inaccessible areas).
Plug Point and Isolator Switch Distances

Plug Points and Isolator Switch Regulations

Please Note - For appliances that have an open burner, electrical equipment, such as light switches; plugs and
isolators shall be at least 200 mm horizontally from the edge of the closest burner or at least 1,5 m measured
from the floor. If a heat deflector is installed above the burner, such as a cooker hood, the electrical point
can be installed above or behind the heat deflector.

The reason for this regulation is due to the heat and fat buildup as you can see in the example image on the left.

Do you have an isolator that doesn't meet the required distances? Here are some options?

  • Remove the switch/Plug point and install a metal blanking plate.
  • Install and blanking plate with a new plug box below the burners at the back of the appliance. Please note, This is only allowed under the new 2024 regulations.
  • Drill through the wall and run the cable along the backing wall to a suitable location. Then, drill a new hole back into the kitchen, ensuring all required distances are met and install a new isolation switch.
